An art installation unveiled Monday now sits at LAC + USC Medical Center titled "Sobrevivir," which means "to survive" in Spanish.


Sobrevivir is a powerful tribute to the women sterilized at Los Angeles County+USC Medical Center by artist Phung Huynh. The art installation was unveiled at a July 2022 ceremony.

California should pay reparations to victims of its eugenics-based sterilization programs, which took away the reproductive abilities of about 20,000 people in the first half of the 20th century, researchers said in a new study.

In memory of two extraordinary women who were plaintiffs in the civil rights lawsuit Madrigal v. Quilligan, Consuelo Hermosillo and Dolores Madrigal.

Consuelo Hermosillo 1949 – 2022

Consuelo Hermosillo was known for cooking up exquisite dishes from her hometown of Vera Cruz, Mexico and she became the head chef for her son’s string of successful restaurants. Sterilized at the age of 23, Consuelo joined nine other women in their class action lawsuit.

Dolores Madrigal 1934 – 2024

Dolores Madrigal and her husband worked at factory jobs to save up for a house and family. When she learned she was sterilized at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, she agreed to sign on as the lead plaintiff in the civil rights lawsuit, Madrigal v. Quilligan.
